No. 1 Baseball Scores 12 Unanswered Runs to Defeat No. 5 Cumberlands

ATHENS, Tenn.- The baseball team recorded a comeback win on Tuesday. The top-ranked Bulldogs scored 12 unanswered runs against No. 5 University of the Cumberlands to win the game 12-10.

The comeback was forced to occur after Cumberlands scored the first seven runs of the game. The comeback operation started in the fourth inning.

The first three batters of the inning for the Bulldogs, Daniel Stewart, Kolton Reynolds, and Jack Stevens all got on base. Edwin Toribio hit a ground out that brought in Jonathan Bosque to give the team their first run. With the bases loaded again, Kruise Newman hit a double that left him as the only person on base as Reynolds, Stevens, and Corbin Shaw all scored to cut the deficit to three runs. A single by Josh Shelly that resulted in an error allowed Newman to score and Devin Dixon hit a triple that Shelly scored. The game became brand new as a wild pitch gave Dixon the time to score from third and the fourth inning ended with the game tied 7-7.

TWU took the lead in the fifth inning. Reynolds and Stevens were standing on base as Toribio hit a ball that resulted in an error, allowing Reynolds to score to give the team an 8-7 lead. Cody McGill brought in Stevens with a single while Newman recorded his fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly that McGill scored on, making the score 10-7 after five innings.

The sixth and seventh innings saw the Bulldogs add two more runs to their score to get to the 12 unanswered runs. Stevens hit an RBI single in the sixth inning with Dixon crossing the plate. In the seventh inning, Shaw hit a solo shot over the left field wall to give the team a 12-7 advantage. Cumberlands scored two runs in the top of the ninth but Tennessee Wesleyan recorded the three outs to hold on and win the game.

Newman led the offense with four RBIs. Anthony Figueroa had five strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief while picking up the pitching win.

Up next for the Bulldogs (13-3) is a home conference series against No. 6 Reinhardt University. The first game of the three-game series is set for Friday at 2:00 p.m.
