
No. 5 Baseball Bash Cumberland
ATHENS, Tenn.- After two games featured 13 runs between the two teams the previous day, the baseball team scored 17 runs in the series finale against the Cumberland University Phoenix on Sunday. The fifth-ranked Bulldogs won the game 17-7 in seven innings, moving their record to 32-10 overall.
Entering the third inning, TWU trailed 2-0. A two-out rally gave the Bulldogs the lead. With the bases loaded by Josh Shelly, Jonathan Bosque, and Kolton Reynolds, Corbin Shaw hit a single to left field that brought in both Shelly and Bosque. Jack Stevens hit a single that gave Reynolds and Stevens a 4-2 advantage at the end of the third. Kurtis Reid moved the lead to 5-2 with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
After seeing the lead cut to just one run in the top of the fifth inning, Tennessee Wesleyan pushed their advantage to six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Stevens blasted a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run, scoring Shaw in the process. Three of the next four batters loaded the bases. Kruise Newman came home from this on an RBI ground out by Nick Collins. Daniel Stewart brought in the remaining runners on second and third with a double, moving the lead to 10-4.
The sixth inning saw Newman hit a solo home run and Kurtis Reid hit an RBI single. Brayan Espinoza scored on Reid's hit, giving the team a 12-5 lead. TWU invoked the run rule in the seventh inning.
Shelly opened the inning with a solo home run. Stewart kept the inning going with a double. Bosque came in to courtesy-run for Stewart, stealing third before scoring on a Reynold RBI single. Jacob Tolson brought the team closer to the ten-run advantage with an RBI single bringing in Reynolds. Chris Catalano finished the game when his single gave Shaw and Tolson the space to score, giving the team a walk-off run-rule win.
Stevens led the offense with four RBIs while Catalano, Stewart, Shaw, and Reid each had two RBIs. Christian Delashmit had three strikeouts in the pitching win.
TWU will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday against Spartanburg Methodist College. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
