No. 25 Women's Soccer Pummel Spartanburg Methodist

ATHENS, Tenn.- A spree of goals in the second half helped the 25th-ranked women's soccer team beat the Spartanburg Methodist College Lady Pioneers 5-0 on Saturday. This was the first-ever meeting against the newcomer to the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).

Tennessee Wesleyan controlled the first half, outshooting Spartanburg Methodist 19-1 in the first 45 minutes of the game. The pace the team handled only resulted in one goal in the first half. The goal came in the 11th minute when Julia Starchl scored on a Valerie Koopman assist. 

Natascha Frei started the flurry of goals on her way to a hat trick, scoring her first of the three in the 56th minute of the game off a double assist by Koopman and Stina Braun. Frei's second goal of the contest came in the 61st minute, this time off a pass by Braun. Frei's third goal came from just outside the box as she sent a ball flying over the keeper, giving the team a 4-0 lead three minutes later. Frei assisted on the final goal of the game, pushing the ball ahead to Starchl who recorded a brace with her goal in the 72nd minute to get the Lady Bulldogs to five goals. 

Ashbey Self, who recorded two saves, got the win in the net.

TWU (5-1, 4-1 AAC) will be back on their home field on Wednesday for a conference game against Brenau University. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
