Columbia (SC)
Columbia, S.C.- The softball team, receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, returned to the field for a conference doubleheader on Monday. The team faced the Columbia College Koalas in a Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader.
Game One:
Emily Mikkola gave the Lady Bulldogs the first lead of the game in the third inning. Courtney Sneed opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a Mackenzie Baldwin sacrifice bunt. A error on Destiny Painter's at-bat put runners on the corner and Mikkola came to the plate and moved each runner off the corner with a double that scored both runners.
As Cheyenne Strong and the defense kept Columbia off the board, TWU scored again in the sixth inning. A quick strike saw Loryn Sherwood hit a home run with pinch-runner Kaley Bradley standing on base for Hallie DeArman, giving the team the 4-0 score they won game one with.
Sherwood and Mikkola both finished with two RBIs in the game. Strong finished the game with six strikeouts.
Game Two:
In the second game, the Lady Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first again. This time, in the second inning, Caroline Moore gave the team the first lead. Malyssa Jeter opened the second inning with a double to left field, remaining on second as Sherwood took first via a hit by pitch. Baldwin loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and Moore hit a double down the right field line to score both Jeter and Sherwood, giving the team a 2-0 lead.
Unfortunately, Columbia scored five runs in the fourth inning. Tennessee Wesleyan was not able to match the runs, going on to fall in the second game 5-2 for a split of the doubleheader.
Moore led the offense with two RBIs. Madison Stott and Baylie Davis both had four strikeouts on the mound.
The schedule puts the Lady Bulldogs (16-9, 12-4 AAC) back in action on Tuesday when the team returns home to face Bluefield University. The first pitch of the conference doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
