No. 1 Seed Baseball Falls to No. 5 seed Union in AAC Tournament

Kingsport, Tenn.- The baseball team, seeded No. 1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament, returned to the field Thursday night for their next game in the tournament. The team opened the tournament on Wednesday with a 14-4 win. The baseball diamond was not as kind to the Bulldogs on Thursday in their contest against the No. 5 seeded Union College Bulldogs.

Neither team scored a run through the first two innings of the game. The scoreless tie was broken by Union in the third inning with a single run. The hole grew deeper in the fourth as the opponents scored four more runs to make the deficit 5-0. Tennessee Wesleyan broke the scoreless streak in the fifth inning.

Cody McGill hit a single to center field and quickly made his way to third on a Evan Magill single on the next at-bat. A throwing error on a pick-off attempt on McGill at third gave the base runner space to score, making the score 5-1 at the end of the inning.

By the time the bottom of the seventh inning began, the Bulldogs saw the deficit grow to 12-1. TWU could not find the offensive momentum to complete a comeback as the team only scored one more run in the game. Cayle Webster earned a walk to open the bottom of the seventh inning. Jacob Tolson kept the bottom of the inning alive after two outs were recorded, hitting a ball that resulted in a RBI as Webster scored to make the score 12-2. The game ended as the run rule came in effect, giving the opponents a 12-2 win.

Tennessee Wesleyan (41-8) will now play an elimination game against No. 4 seed Truett McConnell University on Friday. The win-or-go home game starts at 12:00 p.m.
