Day Off Policy

NAIA Required Day-Off Policy:

Definition of a Day-Off

Student-athletes will be given a minimum of one day off from athletic-related activities each calendar week (Sunday-Saturday) during the Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall and Spring semester dates are determined by the TWU Academic Calendar. Exceptions to the day off policy are permitted.

Definition of Athletic-Related Activities

Athletic-related activities are any directed/supervised events by the Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or other coaching staff member associated with the student athlete’s respective team. Such events include the following:

  • Athletic Competition
  • Practice
  • Strength Training/Conditioning
  • Skill Instruction
  • Film Study
  • Any supervised or observed physical activity “On” or “Off” campus

Definition of Non-Athletic Related Activities

Non-athletic-related activities are events that may occur during the calendar week on a day off. These events may be directed/supervised by the Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or other coaching staff member associated with the student athlete’s respective team.  Such events include the following:

  • Academic Study Sessions
  • Academic Tutoring
  • Community Service or Champions of Character Activities
  • Fundraising
  • Medical examinations, treatment, rehabilitation, and/or other medical requirements
  • Team Travel when no athletic-related activities occur

Exceptions to the Day-Off Policy

TWU strongly supports providing student-athletes with a minimum of one day off per calendar week. However, there are certain periods during the athletic/academic year when exceptions can be permitted. Exceptions to the day off policy include:

  • Preseason practice that occurs prior to the start of classes. (Fall Preseason: August 1 – First Day of Fall Semester Class; Spring Preseason: January 1 – First Day of Spring Semester Class.)
  • Any weeks that contain a Holiday/Break Period that occur during the TWU Academic Calendar
  • Athletic Teams that qualify for Conference and/or NAIA Post-Season participation when a day off is not possible due to preparation, practice, and/or competition schedule
