No. 21 Baseball Scores 24 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of (RV) Milligan

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn.- The baseball team returned to the field at the home of the (RV) Milligan University Buffaloes on Saturday. The two teams played a doubleheader to end their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series.

Game One:

The 21st-ranked Bulldogs fell behind by a run early in the first inning. The team was not in the hole for long as they plated five runs in the second inning. 

Jack Stevens and Cayle Webster opened the inning with singles to get on base. After a sacrifice bunt by Evan Magill moved each runner a base, both runners scored on Corbin Shaw's double to change the lead to TWU's favor. With Shaw on second and Kruise Newman on first after a walk, Carson Ford blasted a ball over the right field wall for a three-run home run, moving the lead to 5-1. In the third inning, seven runs were scored. 

Two of the runs went to the Bulldogs score, coming off solo home runs by both Stevens and Magill. Milligan recorded the remaining five runs to cut Tennessee Wesleyan's lead to one run as the scoreboard read 7-6.

Six more runs occurred in the game. None went to the score of the Buffaloes. Magill gave the team a small cushion in the fifth inning with a two-run jack over the right field wall scoring him and Webster, moving the lead to 9-6. Blake Hubble opened the sixth inning with a triple, scoring on Marco Martinez's ground out to give the team ten runs in the game. 

After making his way to third base, Shaw became the 11th run of the game when he scored on Braxton Turner's single in the seventh inning. The final score of 13-6 was reached on Webster's two-run bomb that brought Stevens to home plate as well.

Magill led the team with three RBIs in the game. Blake Peyton had 12 strikeouts on the mound in the win.

Game Two:

Like the first game of the doubleheader, Milligan took the first lead and the Bulldogs overcame it, scoring 11 unanswered runs in doing so. Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Hubble turned the lead in TWU's favor with a three-run homer that turned also turned Ford and Turner into runs. Martinez made the lead 4-1 as he scored on Webster's fielder's choice. 

Hubble recorded another run in the fifth inning, this time scoring on Stevens' sacrifice fly. Martinez scored again on a Webster single while Newman recorded the second homer of the game, a three-runner as Webster and Magill also scored, ending the fifth inning with a 9-1 lead. The final two runs occurred in the sixth inning.

Turner was run number ten as he scored on Martinez's ground out. The 11th run of that made the score 11-1 came when Hubble scored on a wild pitch from third. 

Daniel Davila got the win on the mound. Hubble and Newman both led the team with three RBIs. 

TWU (21-12, 13-7 AAC) returns home for a non-conference doubleheader against Cumberland University on Wednesday. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
