Softball Sweeps Bryan on Senior Night

ATHENS, Tenn.- It was Senior Night for the softball team on Wednesday. The team honored their seniors in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader against the Bryan College Lady Lions.

Game One:

TWU got to work early in the first game. Caroline Moore became the first base runner for the team, getting on with a single and moving to second on a stolen base. Taylor Penning followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. The return home was fairly easy for the base runners as each made the trot home on Emily Higgins' three-run home run. Bailee Phillips followed with a solo shot, giving the team a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

After Bryan scored two runs in the second, the Lady Bulldogs scored three runs in the third. Higgins singled to open the inning and Phillips earned a walk to put runners on the first two bases. Mackenzie Baldwin recorded an RBI on a double that scored Higgins to make the score 5-2. Hallie DeArman's fly out turned into a sacrifice fly as Phillips tagged up from third on the catch and ran to home plate. Carlynn Atamaniuk's single gave Baldwin the chance to score, moving the score to 7-2. One more run for Tennessee Wesleyan occurred in the sixth when Moore scored on Higgins' single, giving the team the 8-2 score they went on to win by.

Higgins led the offense with four RBIs. Madison Stott got the pitching win.

Game Two:

The second game saw the Lady Bulldogs take the first lead in the second inning. Moore got on base with a walk and moved to third on a Baldwin double. Tatum Massengale hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Moore to score. The score remained 1-0 in favor of TWU until the sixth inning.

In that inning, Bryan scored three runs to take over the lead. The lead remained through the remaining offensive attempts for the Lady Bulldogs, giving Bryan the 3-1 win to split the doubleheader.

Phillips had 10 strikeouts in the game.

Tennessee Wesleyan (20-11, 17-7 AAC) play their final road games of the regular season when they travel to take on the University of Pikeville on Monday. The first game is set for 1:00 p.m.
