Women's Basketball Collects Win in First Road Game

Gallatin, Tenn.- The women's basketball team went on the road for the first time Tuesday for the first time this season. The team faced a familiar foe in the team they opened the season with, the Welch College Lady Flames.

A three-pointer by Anna Crowder along with baskets by Jordan Wright and Jacelyn Stone gave the Lady Bulldogs the first seven points of the game and a 7-0 lead. Mikalee Martin made the score 9-2 with her jumper and an Ashley Baxter three-point basket and layup moved the lead to 16-8. TWU kept adding points through Ella Crowder's free throws, a Yeika Jimenez Diaz layup, and a Wright three-point play to extend the lead to double digits, 23-13. Welch ended the first quarter on a 9-1 run though, cutting the lead down to two points with the scoreboard reading 24-22.

Stone scored the first six points of the second quarter for the Lady Bulldogs to make the lead 30-24. A. Crowder and Diaz scored to make the score 34-27. Unlike the first meeting between the two non-conference opponents, Tennessee Wesleyan did not pull away in the second quarter. Welch scored six straight points to cut the team's lead to just one point. Wright scored back-to-back layups to end the scoring drought and keep the team ahead on the scoreboard. The opponents came back once more and the Lady Bulldogs used a Stone layup to take a 40-38 lead into the halftime break.

Out of the halftime break, Wright, Cambree, and Martin scored to give TWU a 48-41 cushion. Alexis Bates pushed the team to 50 points with her basket with 5:14 left in the third quarter. Diaz and Bates scored to extend the team's lead to double digits with the scoreboard reading 54-43. The third quarter ended with Stone, Wright, and Mayo all getting to the basket to give the team a 60-48 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the combination of Mayo, Stone, and A. Crowder helped the team keep their lead in double digits. With 5:27 left in the game, Bates moved the team to the 70-point mark with her layup. The lead did not decrease for the Lady Bulldogs, and a Sierra Bates free throw gave the team their largest lead of 20 points with the scoreboard reading 80-60. The final score read 82-63 in favor of TWU.

Stone paced the offense with 19 points while Wright added 14 points and led with six rebounds.

The win moved the team's record to 2-0.
