Four Double-Digit Scorers Lead Women's Basketball Past Brenau

ATHENS, Tenn.- The women's basketball team returned to James L. Robb Gymnasium for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game on Saturday. The team closed out the week taking on the Brenau University Golden Tigers.

The first quarter saw competitive play from both teams as the first five minutes saw four ties and three lead changes. Jacelyn Stone gave the team the first lead and Anna Crowder broke the first two ties, making the score 6-4. After a tie, Brenau took a 9-6 lead for their first lead of the game before Mikalee Martin put the game back in a tie with a three-pointer and Alexis Bates forced the final lead change of the game with a three-point basket, making the score 12-9. After a layup by Brenau made the score 16-15, cutting the lead to one point, TWU scored six straight points to end the quarter. Four points came from Cambree Mayo and Stone while Ella Crowder had a layup, helping the team lead 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs take control of the game. With the scoreboard reading 25-21 in favor of the home squad, Tennessee Wesleyan went on an 8-2 run to take their first double-digit lead. Jaci Powell started the run with a three-point play and ended the run with a three-pointer with a Stone layup sandwiched between to move the lead to 33-23. Mayo's three-point basket a few possessions later brought the team to 40 points while a Stone layup gave the team their largest lead in the game so far of 43-29 at the halftime break. 

After points by Mayo and Stone, Martin put the team at the 50-point threshold and made the score 50-33 with a three-point basket. Stone kept the needle moving as her jump shot gave the team their largest lead of the game of 19 points, making the score 52-33 with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter. A free throw by Sierra Bates along with an E. Crowder layup helped the team lead 55-41 at the end of the third quarter. 

The opponents opened the fourth quarter on a 13-5 run through the first four minutes to cut the Lady Bulldogs' lead down to six points. Martin's three-point basket stopped Brenau from pulling closer and a pair of free throws by Stone moved the lead back out to double-digits with the scoreboard reading 65-54. Brenau brought the score down to single digits a few more times but points from Mayo, Powell, and Stone over the remainder of the game helped the team win the game 76-64.

Four players finished in double figures, led by Stone's 17 points. Mayo added 16 points, A. Crowder had 11 points, and Powell scored 10 points. Powell led on the boards with eight rebounds like Stone aided the offense with five assists.
