Women's Basketball Late Momentum Cut by St. Andrews

Laurinburg, N.C.- The schedule took the women's basketball team on the road for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) on Saturday. The team traveled to face the St. Andrews University Lady Knights.

A pre-game technical foul gave the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Jacelyn Stone put the game in a 3-3 tie and a three-pointer by Anna Crowder gave the team a 6-3 advantage. An 8-8 tie occurred with 5:09 remaining in the first quarter off Stone's jump shot. St. Andrews took control of the game, scoring the next six points. Jaci Powell stopped the run with a three-point basket and a jumper by Crowder made the score 18-13 in favor of the opponents at the quarter break.

Tennessee Wesleyan scored the first six points of the second quarter, with four points from Powell and a layup by Stone giving the team a 19-18 lead. The opponents matched the streak with a six-point run of their own, broken up by Powell's jumper. The offense went on a cold spell as a free throw from Cambree Mayo and a pair of free throws by Ashley Baxter were the only points the team scored through the remainder of the second quarter. St. Andrews led 35-24 at halftime.

The flow on offense took a little while to return as the team saw points from Powell and Mikalee Martin be their first four points of the third quarter through the first seven minutes. A three-pointer by Stone with the team trailing 42-28 started the Lady Bulldogs on a 16-3 run they ended the quarter with. Stone scored six straight points to begin the run, while Mayo made the score 42-37 with a three-pointer during the run. Stone's eighth point during the run and another three-pointer by Mayo cut the 14-point deficit down to two points. Crowder had a layup near the end of the quarter to cut the lead to one point, making the score 45-44 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Stone scored the first points of the fourth quarter for TWU to push them ahead 50-45 with 6:42 remaining in the game. A few moments later, Martin made the score 53-47. St. Andrews scored six straight points to put the game in a 53-53 tie. Stone broke the tie with a layup but the momentum did not stay with the Lady Bulldogs as the opponents score 12 straight points to put the team in a double-digit hole with 30 seconds remaining. A layup by Stone along with three-point baskets by Abbey Barr, Crowder, and Stone brought the score back within three points of the lead, but time ran out before the team had a chance of tying the score, falling in the contest 69-66.

Stone, who scored 22 points in the second half, tied her career-high with 28 points in the game. Powell added 12 points while Crowder had 10 points. Powell led the team with nine rebounds and Stone had a team-high eight assists.

Tennessee Wesleyan (7-7, 5-7 AAC) returns home for their next AAC contest. The team will host Truett McConnell University at 4:00 p.m., on Monday.
