Women's Lacrosse Rally Falls Short Against Montreat

Athens, Tenn.- The women's lacrosse team was back in action on their home field on Saturday. The team hosted the Montreat College Cavaliers in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest.

The teams exchanged the first five goals of the game. Kylie Heinrich scored the first goal of the game and Annalise Vigilante gave the team a 2-1 lead on Olivia Downey's assist. Olivia Ritter scored to make the lead 3-2 before three straight goals by Montreat gave the opponents a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The scoring continued for the opponents to open the second quarter as they scored three more goals to move their advantage to 8-3. Vigilante got one of the goals back but Montreat scored less than a minute before halftime to lead 9-4 at halftime.

The hole the Lady Bulldogs faced grew in the opening minutes of the third quarter as the opponents scored two goals to move ahead 11-4. Downey gave the team the fifth goal of the game, and following another Montreat goal, Vigilante gave the team their sixth goal of the game. Montreat scored one more goal before a run by TWU. The third quarter ended with the Lady Bulldogs scoring three consecutive goals, two by Heinrich and one by Mac Alexander, to make the score 13-9 to open the fourth.

After a Montreat goal to open the fourth quarter, Tennessee Wesleyan scored two goals. Downey scored on an Alexander assist and Alexander added a goal of her own to pull within three goals of the lead, a 14-11 score. Montreat stopped the scoring streak momentarily before Heinrich and Downey scored again, both on Alexander's assists, to bring the team within two goals of the lead with the scoreboard reading 15-13. The opponents did not let the Lady Bulldogs pull closer though, scoring two final times to defeat TWU 17-13.

Heinrich (four) and Downey (three) had career-highs in goals. Vigilante also had three goals while Mac Alexander had two goals and three assists. Rylee Brendlinger had eight saves in the net.

The schedule takes the Lady Bulldogs (0-4, 0-2 AAC) to Florida for their next game. The team will face Webber International University on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
