Women's Lacrosse Falls to Thomas More

Athens, Tenn.- The women's lacrosse team played their final non-conference game of the 2023 season on Wednesday. The team hosted the Thomas More University Lady Saints at the TWU Athletic Complex. 

Mac Alexander opened the scoring, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead early in the game. Thomas More scored the next three goals though, putting the team in a two-goal hole. Alexander scored two more times in the quarter, but the opponents owned a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

The second quarter saw Thomas More score the first two goals of the quarter, moving their lead to six goals. Four consecutive goals by TWU cut the deficit down to two goals. Kate Buchannan scored the first of the four goals and was followed by a Olivia Downey goal on an Alexander assist. Downey repaid the fact by assisting on Olivia Ritter's goal. Downey closed out the four-goal streak, scoring on Hannah Housley assist to make the score 9-7. A goal with a minute remaining until halftime gave the opponents a 10-7 lead at the intermission. 

A lead change occurred in the third quarter. Thomas More scored their one and only goal of the third quarter. The next six goals were scored by the Lady Bulldogs. Annalise Vigilante scored off a Kylie Heinrich assist. Heinrich got in on the scoring, making a free-position shot to cut the opponents' lead to one goal. Downey tied the score on Alexander's assist and Ritter gave the team a 12-11 lead on a free position shot. The team ended the quarter with a 13-11 advantage after a Downey goal.  

The opponents scored two straight goals to tie the score 13-13 with 11:50 left in the game. Ritter broke the tie, giving the team their 14th goal on Housley's assist. Unfortunately, the team was not able to find another goal and Thomas More scored three more to give them a 16-14 win. 

Downey led with a career-high five goals while Ritter and Alexander both added three goals. Sarah Lynn Northrop had nine saves in the net. 

Tennessee Wesleyan (1-10, 1-3 AAC) goes on the road for their next game. The team travels to face Brenau University in a conference game on Saturday. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
