Women's Lacrosse Comeback Against St. Thomas Falls Short

ATHENS, Tenn.- The women's lacrosse team played returned to the field at the TWU Athletic Complex for an early morning game. The team hosted the St. Thomas University Lady Bobcats.

Defense was the name of the game in the first quarter as only three goals were scored. The two teams combined for 14 shots in the first quarter. The three goals that were scored went towards the opponents' score, putting the Lady Bulldogs in a 3-0 hole at the end of the first quarter.

TWU got on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Kate Buchannan scored the first goal of the game for the team. Buchannan also scored the second goal of the game for the team later in the second quarter. The team was held out of the net for more goals before the halftime buzzer and went into the intermissions trailing 9-2. 

The third quarter saw defense take king again. Three goals were scored in the quarter, this time though, the Lady Bulldogs found the net unlike the first quarter. Kylie Heinrich opened the quarter with a goal. Buchannan scored the final of the three goals in the quarter, making the score 10-4 after three quarters. 

In the fourth quarter, Buchannan opened the scoring to cut the deficit to five goals. Over the next several minutes, the teams exchanged goals with Jozlyn Long scoring both goals for the team and moving the score to 13-7. Tennessee Wesleyan could not find the goals needed to extend the game, scoring two more times on a Kaelyn Mays and Heinrich goals to make the final score 13-9. 

Buchannan finished with four goals in the game. Rylee Brendlinger finished with 15 saves.

The schedule sends the Lady Bulldogs (1-9) back on the road for their next game. The team will play a conference game against St. Andrews University on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
