Late Goal Sinks Women's Soccer Against No. 18 SCAD Savannah

Athens, Tenn.- The women's soccer team played their first home game of the season on Saturday. Due to their previous game getting washed out due to weather, it technically was also the team's first game of the season. The team took on the 18th-ranked SCAD Savannah Lady Bees.

After defending multiple corner kicks, and a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Laia Roch Font (eight saves, 88.9 save percentage), the Lady Bulldogs almost scored the first goal of the game. Maggie Aird saw her shot hit off the post as she attempted to give the team the first lead of the game. The remainder of the half saw the Lady Bees bring most of the offensive pressure as the TWU offense went cold. The defense did not stand down to the test though, keeping the visitors out of the net and sending the game into a scoreless tie at the halftime break.

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs' offense opened with back-to-back shots. Cristina Escrig and Lauryn Martel both tried to push Tennessee Wesleyan ahead but their shots went wide of the goal. The defensive struggle between the team continued over the next several minutes. A goal occurred in the 83rd minute of the contest. Unfortunately, it was scored by the opponents, giving them a 1-0 lead. The home team was unable to find the matching goal, falling in their home opener 1-0.

Up next for the Lady Bulldogs (0-1) is a home contest against against another ranked opponent, No. 16 Cumberland University. Kick-off at the TWU Athletic Complex is set for 3:00 p.m.
