Women's Soccer Defeats Columbia to Advance in AAC Tournament

Athens, Tenn.- The women's soccer team began play in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Men's Soccer Championship Tournament on Saturday. The team's 11-2 conference record helped them clinch the three seed for the tournament. As the three seed, the Bulldogs hosted their first game of the tournament against the No. 6 seed Columbia College Koalas.

The game was a defensive struggle through the first 30 minutes of action. Shots by Jamie York, Cristina Escrig, and Krista Eik Hardardottir missed their mark as the defense kept Columbia out of the net. The first goal of the game came in the 31st minute. A handball in the box gave the Lady Bulldogs a penalty kick. Hardardottir stepped to the line and converted the penalty kick into a goal, giving the team a 1-0 lead they took into halftime.

In the second half, Jill De Waal and Lauryn Martel tried to add to the lead early, but their shots missed the net. Hardardottir had the final attempt of the game for TWU, a shot which went high. The defense of the Lady Bulldogs held the Koalas out of the net, giving the team a 1-0 victory to advance in the tournament.

Next up for Tennessee Wesleyan (13-4, 11-2 AAC) is a trip the No. 2 seed, Reinhardt University on Wednesday.
