Women's Tennis Upsets No. 5 William Carey to Advance to Quarterfinals
MOBILE, Ala.- The women's tennis team upset the No. 5 seed in the 2025 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship Tournament on Tuesday. The 12th-seeded Lady Bulldogs beat the William Carey University Lady Crusaders in the second round with a 4-0 sweep.
The first part of the upset came with the doubles point for the Lady Bulldogs, taking the point by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Olivia Alcala and Laia Berne took the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, while Mercedes Chasset and Ivet Prat won the No. 2 doubles match 6-4.
Wins in the No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles matches helped TWU complete the upset. Chasset won the No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-4 to go along with Honoka Tsuji's 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 5 singles match. Paula Cigarran gave the team the match win with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the sixth singles spot.
The Lady Bulldogs (16-4) now move on to the quarterfinals of the tournament. This is the third straight season the team has made it to the Round of Eight. The team will face No. 13 seed Xavier University of Louisiana for a chance to play in the semifinals on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. ET.
