Women's Basketball Dashes Through Union

BARBOURVILLE, Ky.- The schedule for the women's basketball took the team on the road on Wednesday. The team traveled north to the home of the Union College Lady Bulldogs for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest.

Tennessee Wesleyan started off the game with a three-point barrage. Mikalee Martin, who made three three-point baskets in the beginning of the game, and a three-point play by Jacelyn Stone helped the team lead 12-7 early in the game. Anna Crowder moved the lead to 14-9 with a layup. The next few minutes saw the team go on a drought and Union score nine consecutive points to lead 18-14. Alexis Bates broke the drought with a three-point jump shot and Stone gave the team a momentarily 19-18 lead with a layup. Bates second three-pointer of the quarter gave the team the lead back, and a layup by Crowder and free throws by Stone helped the team lead 26-21 at the end of the first quarter.

Martin's fourth three-point basket of the game opened the scoring in the second quarter, and a layup a few moments later by Stone gave the team a double-digit lead of 33-23. Jaci Powell's three-point jumper helped the team hold the double-digit advantage as the scoreboard ready 38-26. A cold spell on offense by TWU allowed the opponents to come back and tie the game 38-38. Cambree Mayo hit back-to-back three-pointers to break the tie and send the team into halftime leading 44-38.

Out of the halftime break, Stone and Martin knocked down three-point jumpers to extend the lead to 50-38. The game became close though as Union scored 11 of the next 13 points to make the score 52-49. Stone's jumper along with a free throw by Martin did not let the opponents pull closer and back-to-back three-pointers by Courtney Farr gave the team a little bit more of a cushion as the score moved to 61-51. The score stayed in the Lady Bulldogs' favor as Farr and Crowder scored to give the team a 65-56 lead to begin the fourth quarter.

With eight minutes left in the game, Tennessee Wesleyan took the largest lead of the game of 14 points on Stone's layup with the scoreboard reading 71-57. Abbey Barr hit a three-point basket to move the score to 74-60 with 7:25 remaining in the contest. A layup by Barr and a free throw by Crowder helped the team go on to win the game by a final score of 77-68.

Stone finished the game with 20 points to go along with 18 points (including five three-point baskets) by Martin. Crowder aided the offense with eight assists and led the Lady Bulldogs on the boards with six rebounds.

Tennessee Wesleyan (5-4, 3-4 AAC) play one more regular season game before the new year. The team will travel on Tuesday to play Columbia International University in a conference game beginning at 5:30 p.m.
