No. 6 Baseball Comes Out Hot Against No. 8 Cumberlands

ATHENS, Tenn.- The baseball team, ranked No. 6, hosted another team ranked in the top ten of the NAIA on Tuesday. The team faced off against the No. 8 University of the Cumberlands Patriots.

Tennessee Wesleyan went on the offensive really in the game. Braxton Turner opened the first inning with a hit by pitch. Blake Hubble followed with a single to center field that Turner moved to third on. The third batter of the inning, Marco Martinez, loaded the bases with a walk. A fielder's choice kept the bases loaded as Jack Stevens made it to first but Turner was out at home. Cayle Webster came to the plate and brought everyone home with his grand slam over the left field wall, giving the team a 4-0 lead.

In the second inning, Corbin Shaw got on base via a walk while Evan Magill hit a bunt single to get to first base and move Shaw to second. The runners time on base was shortened when Turner hit a home over the right field wall, giving the team a 7-0 lead after two completed innings. The lead grew to 8-0 when Turner scored in the fourth inning on a wild pitch.

The sixth inning saw both team score. The run for the Bulldogs came from Shaw, who scord on a Hubble forced error, making the score 9-1 at the end of the inning. Cumberlands added three more runs to their score as TWU went on to win 9-4.

Webster led the team with four RBIs while Turner had three RBIs. Blake Peyton picked up the win on the mound, striking out 10 batters in the process.

The schedule takes the Bulldogs (9-6) back on the road for an Appalachian Athletic Conference series against No. 23 Reinhardt University. The teams opne the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
