No. 22 Baseball Beams Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn.- The baseball team, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA, added another win to their record on Tuesday. The team defeated the Cumberland University Phoenix in a road contest 14-2. 

Back-to-back home runs by Blake Hubble and Marco Martinez put the Bulldogs on the board in the top of the first inning. Cumberland cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first though. After the third inning, TWU led 7-1. 

In the second inning, Kruise Newman stood on base as Daniel Stewart sent a ball flying over the left field wall. Hubble recorded his second RBI of the game when Carson Ford scored on his single, making the score 5-1 after the second inning. Cayle Webster's solo home run in the third inning move the lead to five runs while Corbin Shaw scored on Ford's RBI single, giving the team their 7-1 lead after the third inning.

The fifth inning saw Shaw score on a balk while Newman brought two runs across in the sixth inning. As Martinez and Evan Magill stood on second and third, Newman hit a single to right field that allowed the two baserunners to cross home plate, making the score 10-1 after six innings. The final four runs for the Bulldogs occurred in the ninth inning.

Standing in for Stewart after a double, Dante Leach scored on a Braxton Turner single up the middle. Hubble made it two straight singles up the middle and Martinez loaded the bases with a walk. Magill hit a single through the right side of the field to score both Turner and Hubble while Webster singled to left field to bring Martinez across home plate, giving the team their winning score of 14-2.

Jake Sergent was credited with the pitching win.

Tennessee Wesleyan (18-9) returns to conference play when they host Bryan College for a three-game series. The first game of the series is set for Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
