No. 20 Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against No. 3 GGC

ATHENS, Tenn.- The ranked showdown between the No. 20 baseball team and the No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies ended on Saturday. The two teams played a doubleheader to end the three-game series.

Game One:

After falling behind 3-0, the Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning. Cayle Webster opened the inning with a triple to left right field, scoring on an RBI ground out by Evan Magill to make the score 2-1. The momentum did not carry for TWU though as Georgia Gwinnett scored three runs in the fifth and sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-1. By the end of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs cut the deficit down to one run.

Jack Stevens reached base via an error by the opponents. Webster kept the inning going with a single in the bottom of the sixth as Magill came to the plate. The hitter belted a home run over the right field wall, making the score 6-4. Carson Ford had a solo bomb in the bottom of the seventh inning that made the score 6-5 after the end of the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, the Grizzlies scored one run to move their lead out to two runs. In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs took the lead over. Stevens reached base this time with a single and moved once again to second on a Webster single. Magill followed with a single to right field, scoring Stevens from second. Kruise Newman made the score 9-7 with his three-run home run, scoring Webster and Magill in the process.

Cooper Sain got the pitching win while Carter Gannaway was credited with a save. Blake Peyton had nine strikeouts.

Game Two:

The momentum from the eighth-inning comeback in game one did not carry over to the second game for the Bulldogs. After five innings, the Bulldogs found themselves trailing 4-0. Tennessee Wesleyan was able to get a run on the board in the sixth inning. Marco Martinez scored on a Newman fielder's choice to make the score 4-1. The team was not able to find the runs to extend the game as Georgia Gwinnett won game two 5-1 to split the doubleheader.

The split moved the Bulldogs' record to 27-15 overall. The team will be back in action on Friday when they host St. Andrews University for a conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
