No. 20 Baseball Sweeps St. Andrews on Senior Day

ATHENS, Tenn.- The baseball program celebrated Senior Day on Saturday. The 20th-ranked Bulldogs honored their seniors in their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader against the St. Andrews University Knights.

Game One:

Trailing 1-0, Tennessee Wesleyan put up four runs in the third inning. Kruise Newman tied the game with a solo home run. Braxton Turner became a base runner for the Bulldogs with a single, scoring on Jack Stevens' double. Stevens scored on a Marco Martinez double and Martinez scored on an Evan Magill single to give the team a 4-1 lead. A series of home runs helped TWU build their lead.

In the fourth inning, Newman hit his second home run of the game to move the lead to 5-1. Martinez hit a solo shot in the fifth inning to move the lead to five runs. With two runners standing on base, Cody McGill hit a three-run home run to move the lead to 9-1 at the end of the fifth inning. Game Two:

The offensive fireworks that occurred in game one were not as prevalent in game two. A streak of one-run innings helped the Tennessee Wesleyan sweep the doubleheader.

After getting on base via a hit by pitch, Turner eventually got to third via a walk and a ground out. A wild pitch gave Turner the space to score to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead to end the first inning. St. Andrews tied the score in the top of the second.

In the bottom of the second, Newman scored off a Carson Ford hit. making the score 2-1 to end the second. The opponents tied the game in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, Stevens opened the offensive half with a double and moved to third on a pass ball. Magill hit a fly out that turned into a sacrifice fly and gave the team a 3-2 lead as Stevens scored. This time though, St. Andrews did not match the score, and TWU added an insurance run in the form of a Newman home run, his third of the day, in a 4-2 win.

Daniel Davila got the pitching win while Gage Vailes was credited with a save.

The win marked the 30th win of the season for the Bulldogs (30-15, 20-7 AAC), the fourth consecutive season the team has won at least 30 games.

The team will start their final regular season series against AAC foe Union College on Thursday. The single game between the two conference opponents is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
