No. 2 Baseball Run Rules KCU
ATHENS, Tenn.- The baseball team won the first game of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Kentucky Christian University on Thursday. No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan invoked the run rule in the 10-run win.
Chris Catalano got things started for the Bulldogs, blasting the first pitch of the bottom of the first over the center field wall. Corbin Shaw made it two consecutive home runs for the team, hitting a solo shot in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie. The third inning saw three more runs scored via the long ball.
Daniel Stewart opened the third inning with a solo bomb over center field. As Edwin Toribio stood on first after a walk, Kruise Newman sent a ball flying over the right field wall, giving the team a 5-1 advantage at the end of the third inning. Stewart hit his second home run of the game in the fourth inning, this time a two-run shot that brought in Devin Dixon, moving the team's lead to 7-2.
TWU brought the run rule into effect in the sixth inning. Catalano started the inning with a double while moving to third on an error on Dixon's at-bat. Dixon opened up first by stealing second and first eventually was occupied by courtesy-runner Jonathan Bosque after a Stewart walk. Kolton Reynold made it two straight walks, relieving Catalano of his time on base to become the first run of the inning. An error on Josh Shelly's at-bat gave Dixon the space to score while Toribio hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Bosque to score. A ground out by Shaw gave Reynolds the space to score and the 12th run of the game came across when a wild pitch opened up an opportunity for Shelly to score. Three outs in the top of the seventh inning gave the Bulldogs the 12-2 win in seven innings.
Stewart finished with three RBIs while Newman and Shaw each had two RBIs. Julian Berinti pitched six innings, striking out five batters in the win.
Tennessee Wesleyan (21-5, 10-3 AAC) finishes the series against Kentucky Christian on Friday with a doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
