DAYTON, Tenn.- The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series between the second-ranked baseball team and the Bryan College Lions finished with a doubleheader on Saturday. TWU split the doubleheader with their rivals, winning the first game 12-5.
Game One:
The game was in a 1-1 tie, with Kruise Newman's home run being the solo run for the Bulldogs, until the fifth inning.
Newman opened the inning with a triple and was brought in on Brayan Espinoza's single. With Espinoza standing on second after Devin Dixon reached on an error, Daniel Stewart hit a home run to extend the team's lead by three runs. Josh Shelly made it two home runs in the inning, hitting his after a Kolton Reynolds walk to give the team a 7-1 lead after the top of the fifth. Bryan cut the lead down to three after the sixth inning though.
Shelly pushed the lead back out for TWU in the seventh, hitting a three-run homer that brought in Stewart and Reynolds. The team added another run in the eighth and ninth innings.
The eighth saw Dixon score on a Reynolds fielder's choice while Newman hit his second solo home run of the game in the ninth, propelling the team to the 12-5 win.
Along with their two home runs, Shelly finished the game with five RBIs while Newman had two RBIs. Stewart had three RBIs. Daniel Batcher struck out four batters in the win.
Game Two:
The first lead of the game went to the Bulldog. Dixon became the first run of the game by getting on base with an error, stealing second, and getting to third on an error, then scoring on Reynolds' double to give the team a 1-0 lead after the first.
In the second inning, Newman blasted his third home run of the day to move the team's lead to 2-0. The team led 3-0 after Geremy Garcia scored on a Chris Catalano RBI single.
The lead did not hold for TWU though as Bryan scored six runs over the second and third innings. Two more home runs, hit by Garcia and Reynolds, were not enough to bring the Bulldogs back as they fell 6-5 to split the doubleheader.
Reynold led the offense with two RBIs. Julian Berinti had four strikeouts on the mound.
Tennessee Wesleyan (24-7, 13-5 AAC) will be back at Athens Insurance Stadium on Tuesday to host No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett College. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
