Baseball Ends Season in Final Five at Avista NAIA World Series
LEWISTON, Idaho- The season came to an end on Wednesday for the baseball team in the 2025 Avista NAIA World Series. The third-seeded Bulldogs fell in an elimination game against the No. 2 seed Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies 5-3.
The rematch between the two teams began similarly to how the first game the two teams played in the World Series with Georgia Gwinnett scoring two runs in the first inning. In the fourth inning, the opponents moved their lead to 4-0.
Unlike the first game, Tennessee Wesleyan struck back with two runs of their own in the sixth inning. Corbin Shaw eventually became one of the runs, getting on base with a single. Brayan Espinoza was the second run in the inning, reaching first on a hit by pitch. A double by Chris Catalno gave both base runners the opportunity to score, making the score 4-2 at the end of the first. Georgia Gwinnett added a run to their lead in the seventh.
The Bulldogs made one more run at the lead in the ninth inning. With two outs in the inning, Shaw kept the game alive with a single. Pinch-hitter Nick Collins followed with a single to right field. Jack Stevens followed with a single to bring in pinch-runner Jonathan Bosque, cutting the deficit to two runs. The go-ahead run came into play when a hit by pitch on Catalano's at-bat loaded the bases. Unfortunately, the third out was recorded before the Bulldogs could get any of the base runners across home plate.
TWU finishes the season with a 48-14 overall record, marking their fifth consecutive season with at least 40 wins. The program has won 40 or more games in 10 of the last 11 seasons.
