Men's Basketball Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Montreat
ATHENS, Tenn.- Tennessee Wesleyan University (TWU) showcased tenacity and teamwork in their matchup against Montreat College on November 23, 2024. Despite falling 79-67, TWU displayed strong moments of brilliance, particularly in the second half, and several players delivered standout performances.
TWU started the game with solid defensive efforts led by Amauri Young and Armando Cuardado. Young's assist set up Cuardado for the game's opening jumper, giving TWU an early 2-0 lead. Peyton West connected on a three-pointer shortly after, and Ty Hurst's defensive rebound transitioned into a successful fast-break jump shot.
Montreat responded with aggressive play, but Cuardado's block and rebounds kept TWU in the game. As the first half progressed, TWU managed to stay competitive through jumpers by Hurst and Cuardado. At halftime, TWU trailed 26-18.
Out of the halftime break, the offense went cold for the Bulldogs. Montreat scored the first seven points of the half to put Tennessee Wesleyan in a 15-point hole. The cold spell continued for the Bulldogs, seeing the deficit climb as high as 27 points. Jay Reed, Reshaun Hampton, Ty Runyan, Charles Neverdon, and Nichaune Jones helped the offense come back to life. The team was able to come back within ten points of the lead but was not able to get the team all the way back, going on to fall in the game by a final score of 79-67.
Neverdon led the offense with a career-high 24 points while Ty Runyan had 10 points.
TWU (2-4, 1-3 AAC) will be back in action on Saturday when they face No. 5 Georgetown College at The Show in Kingsport, Tenn. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
