Men's Basketball Drops Finale at The Show Against Cumberland

KINGSPORT, Tenn.- The men's basketball team battled hard in their final game of The Show on Sunday. Tennessee Wesleyan battled hard against the Cumberland University Phoenix (TN) but fell short in a competitive 84-75 loss.

TWU began the game with intensity on defense, as Armando Cuardado made an early block and grabbed key rebounds. Jay Reed capitalized on turnovers with fast-break layups, keeping the Bulldogs competitive. Ty Hurst's offensive rebound and layup tied the score at 5-5, while Amauri Young added a jump shot to put TWU ahead 11-10. Hurst and Reed continued their scoring spree, combining for timely layups and free throws. Stratton Lovvorn added critical points from the line to maintain TWU's momentum. Despite a late surge by Cumberland, TWU trailed by only two points, 35-33, at halftime.

The Bulldogs came out of halftime determined, with Cuardado's layup tying the game at 35-35. Reshaun Hampton added a clutch three-pointer, and Hurst delivered another jump shot to keep the game within reach. TWU's defensive effort, highlighted by Cuardado's rebounding and blocks, prevented Cumberland from pulling away early. In the final minutes, Hurst scored a critical jump shot, narrowing the deficit to 78-72. Young's free throws and Reed's offensive push kept TWU fighting until the end, but Cumberland's late scoring run secured the victory.

Hurst (21 and 10) and Reed (17 and 11) both finished with double-doubles in the game.

The schedule keeps the Bulldogs (2-6, 1-3 AAC) on the road as they jump back into conference play on Saturday against Columbia College. The first-ever meeting between the two teams is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
