Softball Brings the Brooms to Montreat

Black Mountain, N.C.- The softball team returned back to the field on Wednesday. The team played their final road games of the regular season, traveling to face the Montreat College Lady Cavaliers in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader.

Game One:

Even though the hits came, the offense did not score for the Lady Bulldogs until the seventh inning. In the circle through the entire game, Cheyenne Strong and the defense only allowed one hit.

The seventh inning started with a Hallie DeArman single. A sacrifice bunt by Mackenzie Baldwin moved pinch-runner Emma Clevinger to second. After a groundout moved Clevinger to third, the runner scored on a Destiny Painter single to give the team a 1-0 lead. Painter stole second to move into scoring position, turning into the second run of the game on Emily Mikkola's single, helping the team win the first game 2-0.

Strong finished with 10 strikeouts in the game.

Game Two:

The offense scored much quicker in the second game. Caroline Moore began the first inning with a single, moving to second on a stolen base. Mikkola got on base with a single, moving Moore to third base. On an attempt to steal second by Mikkola, Moore took of advantage and stole home to give the team a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

The team scored again in the fourth inning. Courtney Sneed eventually became the run after getting on base with a single and advancing to second on an error. Malyssa Jeter brought Sneed home with her single, moving the lead to 2-0.

A third insurance run occurred in the seventh inning. Loryn Sherwood started with a double to left field. A single down the right field line scored pinch-runner Gracee Roberts, giving the team a 3-0 lead. Montreat scored one run before a strikeout by Baylie Davis ended the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Davis finished with eight strikeouts in the game.

TWU remains at home for the remainder of their schedule, starting with a conference doubleheader against Reinhardt University on Monday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
