Softball Wins Final AAC Road Doubleheader

PIKEVILLE, Ky.- The softball team went on the road for the final time in the regular season on Monday. The team traveled to face the University of Pikeville Lady Bears in a conference doubleheader.

Game One:

The first game of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader saw a defensive strife. The teams combined for six hits and only one run was scored in the game. The lone run of the game occurred in the fifth inning. It came off the opening batter of the inning for the Lady Bulldogs when Hallie DeArman hit a home run, helping the team win the first game 1-0.

On the defensive side of things, Bailee Phillips had a perfect game broken up in the bottom of the seventh inning. Phillips finished the game with 10 strikeouts and only surrendered one hit in the complete game win.

Game Two:

The second game saw a little more offense.

Emily Higgins gave the team the first lead of the contest with a solo home run. Pikeville took a 2-1 lead in the third inning though. Higgins tied the game in the fourth inning.

Italia Kyle opened the fourth inning with a single. Higgins hit a single that Kyle would score on, moving the score to 2-2. The score changed again in the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, Keily Schweitzer opened with a double, moving to third on a Courtney Sneed ground out. A throwing error on Macy Chastain's at-bat gave Schweitzer the chance to score, giving the team a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, Pikeville scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.

In the eighth inning, Avery Hope put TWU ahead. With Higgins standing on first, Hope hit a ball that flew out of the park, resulting in a two-run home run and a 5-3 lead. The team held on to the lead, winning the game in eight innings to sweep the doubleheader.

Isabella Jenkins was credited with the pitching win.

The regular season concludes for the Lady Bulldogs (21-11, 18-7 AAC) when they host Truett McConnell University on Wednesday. The first game of the conference doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m.
