Softball Rallies to Sweep Point

WEST POINT, Ga.- The softball team came from behind in two wins on Saturday. The team swept the doubleheader against the Point University Skyhawks.

Game One:

After the first two innings, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 3-0. TWU got on the board in the third inning. Carlynn Atamaniuk got on base with a single and moved to second on a walk by Macy Chastain. Taylor Penning recorded her first of three RBIs on a single that Atamaniuk scored on. Point scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to move their lead to 5-1.

In the fourth inning, the Lady Bulldogs took the lead. Kaley Bradley hit a single and advanced to second on a Courtney Sneed single. A wild pitch moved each runner before Atamaniuk loaded the bases with a walk. Errors on the at-bats of Chastain and Penning helped the team tie the game. Bradley scored the first error while Sneed and Atamaniuk scored on the second error. Bailee Phillips pushed the team ahead with a double, bringing Chastain home. A wild pitch allowed Penning to score, moving the team ahead 7-5 after the fourth inning.

Tennessee Wesleyan extended the lead to 10-5 in the sixth inning. A walk and a bunt single got Chastain and Penning on base. Two wild pitches moved the runners with the second scoring Chastain. Penning scored on a RBI ground out by Tatum Massengale and a single by Bradley resulted in two runs when Ali Richards and Mackenzie Baldwin both scored, getting the team to ten runs. A scoreless seventh inning gave the team the 10-5 win.

Phillips had eight strikeouts in the circle.

Game Two:

The comeback for the Lady Bulldogs came much later in the second game of the doubleheader. The first inning ended with a 1-1 tie. After a single to begin the game, Chastain moved to second on a Katie Willet sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. A ground out by Massengale resulted in an RBI when Chastain scored. Point broke the tie in the third inning.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, the rally occurred. Richards kept the inning alive, earning a walk and stealing second to move into scoring position. An error put runners on the corner as Richards moved to third and Chastain ended up on first. Willett pushed the team ahead with a single that both Richards and Chastain scored on, and a scoreless bottom half gave the team the sweep.

Isabella Jenkins finished with five strikeouts in the circle.

TWU (14-9) begins a week with three doubleheaders against conference opponents on the road on Tuesday. The team face Union Commonwealth University at 2:00 p.m.
