Women's Basketball Bombards CIU

ATHENS, Tenn.- The women's basketball team blitzed out to a huge lead and never looked back in their game on Saturday. The team hosted the Columbia International University Lady Rams in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game.

The first quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs score 21 points, with all the points coming from seven baskets behind the three-point arc. The hot shooting helped the team race out to a 15-0 lead. Three-point baskets from Anna Crowder, Jacelyn Stone, Mikalee Martin, Cambree Mayo, Sierra Bates, and Courtney Farr helped the team lead 21-5 at the end of the first quarter. 

A pair of free throws by Stone were the first points to not come from a three-pointer, moving the score to 23-7. Stone made back-to-back three-point jumpers to give the team nine consecutive on-the-floor points from three-point land before a two-point jump shot by Ella Crowder represented the first two-point basket of the game for TWU with 2:07 in the second quarter remaining. A pair of free throws by Alexis Bates helped the team lead 33-14 at halftime.

Back-to-back-to-back three-point baskets by Stone and Mayo moved the team's score over 40 points as the scoreboard read 42-20 five minutes into the third quarter. Eight consecutive points from S. Bates gave the Lady Bulldogs a 50-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Stone recorded her sixth three-point basket in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter while Martin hit a three-point jump shot to make the score 60-31. Points from A. Bates, Farr, Abbey Barr, Aubrey Long, and E. Crowder helped the team win the game by 40 points with the score being 76-36. 

Stone led the offense with 22 points in the game while S. Bates finished with a career-high 11 points. Bates also led on the boards with eight rebounds while A. Crowder led with six assists.

Tennessee Wesleyan (3-2, 2-2 AAC) go on the road for their next contest. The team will travel to face Johnson University on Tuesday in a conference game. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
