Women's Basketball Blast Welch for First Win of Smith Era
ATHENS, Tenn.- Tennessee Wesleyan University (TWU) showcased an impressive and dominant performance, defeating Welch College 99-61 on November 5, 2024. This victory was marked by explosive scoring, aggressive defense, and excellent teamwork.
Tennessee Wesleyan set the tone early, building a strong lead right from the start. Jalayah Lindsey opened the scoring with a layup, followed by a quick jump shot to give TWU a 5-0 advantage. Jacelyn Stone and Jaci Powell kept the pressure on, with Stone sinking a layup and Powell hitting a three-pointer to extend the lead to 12-2. Lindsey and Stone continued to control the pace, combining for multiple fast-break points and powering TWU to a 26-14 lead by the end of the quarter.
TWU continued its offensive surge in the second quarter with Anna Crowder and Jalayah Lindsey converting layups, which further widened the gap. The team capitalized on turnovers by Welch, often turning them into quick points. Abbey Barr and Powell each added critical shots, including a three-pointer from Powell, to extend the lead. By halftime, TWU held a commanding 53-29 lead, showcasing their offensive depth and defensive prowess.
TWU slowed down slightly out of the halftime break but maintained control, with Crowder and Lindsey leading scoring efforts. Powell added more points from mid-range, and Sierra Bates made impactful plays on both ends of the court. Even as Welch tried to narrow the margin, TWU's defense held firm, limiting Welch's scoring to only 14 points in the quarter. Heading into the final period, TWU held a solid 69-43 lead.
TWU closed out the game in style, putting up 30 points in the final quarter. Stone contributed several key baskets, while Barr and Courtney Farr added jump shots that helped seal the game. Grace Phillips and Alexis Bates also made late contributions, helping TWU push their score to 99. In a statement performance, Tennessee Wesleyan's depth and execution were on full display, ending the game with a decisive 99-61 victory.
