
Women's Basketball Win Thrilling Game Against Bluefield
BLUEFIELD, Va.- The women's basketball team went on the road for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game on Tuesday. The game against the Bluefield University Lady Rams had an exciting finish in a 58-56 win for the Lady Bulldogs.
TWU began with a slow offensive start, but Jaci Powell's three-pointer, assisted by Ella Crowder, gave them an early 3-2 lead. Jalaya Lindsey followed with a three-pointer to make the score 6-4. Despite multiple defensive stops, including rebounds from Lindsey and Anna Crowder, Bluefield managed to stay ahead, ending the quarter with an 11-10 advantage.
TWU turned up the intensity in the second quarter. Jacelyn Stone's layup and free throws pushed the Bulldogs ahead 22-18 midway through the period. A. Crowder's defensive rebounds and her own scoring efforts extended the lead, while Julia Howard added a jumper to maintain momentum. TWU entered halftime with a narrow 27-22 lead.
The third quarter was a defensive battle, as Bluefield closed the gap with a strong push. However, Powell's three-pointer and Stone's layup along with a layup by Courtney Farr pushed the team ahead 34-24 early in the second half. The offense went cold near the end of the quarter, but defensive stops by A. Crowder and Lindsey held Bluefield at bay, with the Lady Bulldogs clinging to a 39-37 lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was filled with drama, which included eight lead changes and two ties. After a jump shot by Stone made the score 56-54 in favor of Bluefield, Lindsey caused a turnover with a steal on the next possession. Powell forced the final lead change of the quarter, sinking a game-winning three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining. Stone sealed the victory with a free throw in the final seconds, securing TWU's 58-56 win.
Stone led the team with 16 points while A. Crowder had a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Powell finished with 15 points in the game, all from behind the three-point line.
The schedule sees Tennessee Wesleyan (5-4, 4-3 AAC) play at the Johnson University Lady Royals Classic, a two-game event, for their next action. The first of the two games is set for Monday, Dec. 30 against Cumberland University at 2:00 p.m.
