
Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Montreat
ASHEVILLE, N.C.- The women's basketball team went on the road to face the Montreat College Lady Cavaliers. The team was unable to complete a final run at the lead, falling 70-62 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game.
Tennessee Wesleyan had a challenging opening, with Montreat jumping out to a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jacelyn Stone helped the team take an early 4-2 lead with two layups before an 11-3 run gave Montreat a 13-7 lead. Julia Howard and Anna Crowder combined to score five straight points to cut the deficit to one but the opponents ended the quarter on a 8-1 run to take their seven-point advantage into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw a spirited push from the Lady Bulldogs bring the team back within one, led by Stone layups from and a three-pointer by Crowder to make the score 21-20. A layup by Courtney Farr and three-point basket Jalaya Lindsey gave the team 25-23 lead, and free throws by Alexis Bates a few moments later moved the team's lead to 28-26. Howard put the game in one more tie, this time 30-30, before Montreat scored seven straight points to lead 37-30 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Bulldogs ramp up their intensity. Powell opened the scoring for TWU with a three-point play and followed with a jumper while Stone hit a layup to cut the Montreat lead down to two. Abbey Barr's layup kept the deficit at two points but by the end of the third quarter, Montreat led 51-45.
In the final frame, the Lady Bulldogs mounted a spirited comeback attempt. Montreat opened the fourth quarter with 10 straight points to lead 61-45 with 7:01 left. With 1:12 remaining, Tennessee Wesleyan had cut the opponents' lead down to four points. The team was not able to pull closer though as the team fell by eight points.
Crowder had a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds while Stone had 14 points.
Up next for the Lady Bulldogs (9-9, 7-7 AAC) is a non-conference contest against Welch College on Monday. The road game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET.
