Women's Tennis Advances to Semifinals in NAIA Tournament for First Time Ever

Mobile, Ala.- The women's tennis team played in the Round of Eight of the 2023 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship Tournament for the first time in program history on Thursday. The No. 13 seed in the tournament, TWU faced the No. 5 seed in the field, the Ave Maria University Gyrenes.

Scores of 6-3 in the No. 2 doubles featuring Mercedes Chasset and Natacha Mesa, and the No. 3 doubles of Astrid Staksrud and Julieta Beltramino gave TWU the doubles point and a lead of 1-0 heading into the singles contests.

The magical run in the tournament continued for the Lady Bulldogs. With wins by Olivia Alcala in the No. 1 singles (7-6, 6-4), Chasset in the No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-2) and Raquel Canadas (6-2, 6-0) in the No. 5 singles, the team won the match 4-3 to move on to the semifinals of the national tournament, a spot of the program had never been before.

Tennessee Wesleyan (14-3) will face No. 1 seed Keiser University in the Round of Four on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
