Women's Tennis Historic Run Ends in NAIA Tournament Semifinals

Mobile, Ala.- The women's tennis team, the No. 13 seed in the 2023 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship Tournament, played in the semifinals of the tournament for the first time in program history on Friday. The team faced the top seed in the tournament, the Keiser University Lady Seahawks.

After the doubles, the Lady Bulldogs were in a 1-0 hole as Keiser won the doubles point. 

Even though the team battled, the opponents went on to take all the singles matches needed to win the match, winning the match 4-0 to end Tennessee Wesleyan's historical run in the national tournament.

The team ends the season with a 15-4 overall record, tying the program record for wins. The team's other accomplishments include:

  • Highest preseason NAIA ranking in program history
  • Appalachian Athletic Conference 10-0 record- first undefeated conference record and most conference wins
  • AAC Regular Season Champions (second-ever regular season title)
  • AAC Player of the Year (Alcala)
  • AAC Coach of the Year (Francisco Gallardo) 
  • AAC Tournament Runner-up
  • NAIA Tournament Quarterfinals for first time in program history
  • NAIA Tournament Semifinals for first time in program history
  • Won two matches in the NAIA Tournament for the first time in program history
  • Won three matches in the NAIA Tournament for the first time in program history
  • Defeated the highest seed in the NAIA Tournament in program history (No. 4)
