Volleyball Wins Tri-Match Against LaGrange and Tuskegee

LaGrange, Ga.- The volleyball team went on the road for a tri-match on Saturday. The team ended the day with wins against NCAA Division III opponent LaGrange College and NCAA Division II opponent Tuskegee University, winning both matches with 3-0 scores. 

vs. LaGrange:

In the first set of the race to 25, the action was close between the two teams. After seeing the opponents lead for a few points, the team battled back to tie the set a few times before taking over. After a Jia Weathersby kill made the score 14-14, TWU went on to score seven straight points to move ahead 21-14, ultimately winning the first set 25-18.

Points from Amya Sutton and Shante Smith helped the Lady Bulldogs break the last tie of the set at 3-3. Similiar to the first set, Tennessee Wesleyan made a run, turning their 5-3 advantage into a 17-6 lead, holding that score on Janie Merritt's service ace. The team went ahead 2-0 when they took the second set by a score fo 25-12.

The sweep was completed with a 25-16 third set win for the Lady Bulldogs. The team changed a one-point lead into a 10-point lead deep into the set to help the team win the match 3-0.

Sutton and Hibdon both finished with eight kills in the match. Hibdon had 12 assists while Megan Thompson had 17 digs.

vs. Tuskegee

12 kills helped TWU win the first set of the match against Tuskegee 25-13. A kill by Hibdon was the deciding point in the team's first set victory.

In the second set, the Lady Bulldogs won the first 10 points. Included in that streak were kills by Olivia Miller, Olivia Bolin, Smith, and Hibdon. The team carried the momentum to a commanding 25-6 second set win.

The third set saw a closer end score then the other sets. A battle that resulted in Tennessee Wesleyan having to go over the 25-point mark saw the Lady Bulldogs win the set 26-24 to win the match 3-0.

Smith had a team-high eight kills in the match while Hibdon had 13 assists. Thompson had 11 digs in the contest.

TWU (3-7) returns to James L. Robb Gymnasium for their next match to open Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play against Union Commonwealth University. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
