Volleyball Battles Against Union

ATHENS, Tenn.- The volleyball team opened Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play with a match against the Union Commonwealth University Lady Bulldogs on Thursday. The team fell in the contest 3-1.

TWU were the winners of the first set. After falling behind 5-2, the team battled back to tie the score to take a 6-5 lead on Jia Weathersby's kill. A 10-10 tie was broken by Janie Merritt's kill and the team used the momentum to eventually take a 20-17 advantage. The team held on to their advantage, taking the first set by a score of 25-21. The team had 17 kills in the first set.

In the second set, the opponents halted the Lady Bulldogs' momentum by taking a 9-2 lead. Tennesee Wesleyan cut the lead down to two at one point in the set, but Union moved their lead to 20-12. The team battled to come close to forcing extra points in the set, falling 25-23 in the second set. 

Union won the third set to move ahead 2-1. TWU was able to keep the score close in the beginning of the set before the opponents pulled away for a 25-18 win in the third set. 

Looking to keep the match going, TWU kept the fourth set close. Deep in the fourth set, the score was 22-22. The team was not able to turn the tie in their favor, falling the fourth set 26-24, and in the match 3-1.

Amya Sutton led the offense with 14 kills.
